About the position
The Research Officer will join the Infection and Immunity Division to study the effect of new antimalarial compounds on malaria parasite development in liver cells. This project is funded by the Wellcome Trust and is in collaboration with Merck USA. The Boddey laboratory is focused on understanding how malaria parasites infect the liver and is developing novel antimalarial drugs that block parasite development at multiple stages of the lifecycle.
The successful candidate will hold a Masters or PhD degree and have a strong background in rat and/or mouse work and cell culture. Proficiency in flow cytometry and work with rodent malaria parasites is highly desirable but not essential. The successful applicant will work with malaria parasites and mosquitoes in the Institute’s insectary and study liver infection in the presence of novel antimalarial compounds.

Selection Criteria
Knowledge and skills

  • A relevant Honours,/Masters/Doctoral qualification or equivalent
  • An excellent academic record and achievements
  • Demonstrated ability and potential for excellence and productivity in research
  • Strong expertise in ethical research with rats and/or mice
  • Research experience that has resulted in publications would be advantageous
  • Proven interpersonal and collaborative skills in achieving research outcomes
  • Capacity to work independently and be a productive member of a research team
  • Time management skills and ability to prioritise work
  • Ability to assist with student supervision
  • A strong work ethic

Terms of appointment
The position is available for a period of 2 years in the first instance. Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
