Dirofilaria immitis adult female 25 - 30 cm long (males 12 - 18 cm) from the right heart of a dog. In humans, worms do not reach maturity and no microfilariae can be detected. Most human patients are asymptomatic and pulmonary nodules (coin lesions) are found accidentally. Dirofilaria immitis lives in the hearts of canines. Heartworm disease is a serious health issue for domestic dogs.
