Honours and PhD vacancy for the Wellcome Trust Plasmodium ovale project, Centre for Population Health at Burnet Institute

At the Molecular Genomic Epidemiology in the Centre for Population Health, Burnet Institute their research aims to understand the epidemiology, population biology and evolution of malaria parasites using genomic, bioinformatic and population genetic tools. Relatively limited population genetic data for malaria is available from the Asia Pacific region, including PNG. Most recently, a major goal of the lab has been to map the diversity of P. falciparum populations throughout the region with a particular focus on candidate vaccine antigens, a project funded by the NHMRC. The information gained will provide a basis upon which to plan and monitor malaria interventions and eventually elimination campaigns. Our strong collaborative links to the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Institute of Medical Research is providing field isolates from malaria studies already being conducted in the region.

We would be delighted to hear from enthusiastic Honours or PhD students with a basic or medical science background. Please contact Alyssa Barry (alyssa.barry@burnet.edu.au) for more information.
